You are managing space much more than you manage the ball in any match.

The reality is that you will spend merely 2-3 minutes on the ball. But, you will spend 90 minutes managing space. With this in mind you will understand how important it is to manage space well if you want to dominate the game.

The next Principles of Play will help you manage space effectively. Keep in mind that the overarching theme of your performance will be to find and exploit space. If you do that well, you will improve your ability to manage the ball well.

I know it sounds strange to those who have grown up thinking that ball control alone would make you an elite player. It will not. Many players can pass, receive, shoot and dribble. The best players know how to find space, manage it well and then execute within that space.

The ball is the present, but space is the future on a football field. Elite footballers play in the future – one or two moves ahead of their opponents.
